Welcome to our 60th Anniversary celebrations Happy birthday to us – British Council first opened its doors in Hong Kong 60 years ago, in 1948. We launched our celebrations in January and throughout the whole of 2008, we’re hosting a diverse programme of special events to mark the important anniversary for us. You can find out more by clicking on www.britishcouncil.org.hk/celebration60. To mark the anniversary, we have given our premises in Admiralty a bit of a facelift. We hope you like the changes we’ve made and after you’ve had a look online, why not come and visit us for real at 3 Supreme Court Road. After you arrive at our premises and take the escalator up to the first floor, does it feel like you are arriving somewhere slightly west of Hong Kong? The theme to our facelift is travelling to the UK and getting a UK education. As the first sign says, welcome to the first floor, welcome to an education in the UK and welcome, we hope, to your future with the British Council. Our first floor area is usually a little brighter but as you can see, the windows are concealed behind a huge and information-packed display. This is the iconic map of one of the world’s oldest and most famous transport networks – the London Underground, affectionately known as ‘the tube’. Our designers have transformed the tube map into a learning map – instead of the tube stations, they have represented all the colleges and universities around the UK. From the University of Abertay in Dundee to Canterbury Christ Church University, from Queens University in Belfast to the University of Glamorgan, these are the colleges and universities which our 60 alumni over the last six decades have attended. Moving on up Where next? Well have a look at the signposts on the green pillar – on the left, you can catch a glimpse of London’s imposing Tower Bridge and beside that a shot of one of Brighton’s landmarks: The Peace Statue. On the right you can see the majestic sweep of the Royal Crescent and the recently-renovated British Museum. And straight ahead, before you jump into a lift, there’s one of the most quintessential, defining images of UK history, Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument in Wiltshire. We’ve given our four main lifts a facelift as well and together they capture some of the essence of contemporary culture in the UK. Depending on which one which you take, you could either be surrounded by the lush green grounds of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art; slapbang in the middle of an applauding, appreciative audience, quietly mingling with other students in a university cloisters or face-to-face with the powerful presence of the British Museum. Whichever one you take, enjoy the ride.

Take the challenge We haven’t done too much to our teaching floors as they are busy spaces, as you will know only too well if you have ever been there between classes! But on the fourth floor we would like to challenge you to a Word Shake Challenge – have a go at the newly-installed interactive game which two people can enjoy and learn with. It’s easy to use and the user can chose a 3 minute challenge or a one minute practice game so it’s ideal between classes if you have a short wait. And finally, what are all those rather cardboard-looking people doing hanging around? They’re the cartoon characters from the new English Online Soap- ‘Big City Small World’ and we’ve left a space in two of their bodies so you can stick your face through and why not get your photo taken? We hope you’ve enjoyed looking round our building online and that you now have a better feeling for what we do here at the British Council in Hong Kong. Thank-you for sharing in our celebrations - we hope to see you again soon.

Our Alumni are our people for the times The main reception area of our third floor has been thrown over to our 60 alumni, our People for the Times. Now that you have tasted some of the great cultural feasts available to you when you go to the UK for an education, in our third floor reception area you can read more about the experiences of some of the students who have already enjoyed their time living and studying at a UK college. They all agree that it’s not just about the academic experiences – but that living in the UK has properly prepared them for working and living in the global world. Read about their stories in our displays and when you’re here, you can also log on to the website from one of our terminals to read more about their time in the UK: www.britishcouncil.org.hk/celebration60. We hope their stories inspire you.
